There is a unique reason behind this.During the Naklevar ritual, the city lights are switched off and the idols are replaced in the dark. No one is allowed to look at the idols during this process.
The idols of Jagannath, Balarama and Subhadra are made of lime wood. These idols are made from the trunk of a 100-year-old lime tree. When Shri Krishna left his body, his heart remained in Puri. That is why it is said that the temple of Jagannath is that of Shri Krishna himself.
Devotees fear that the lemon stems may deteriorate quickly. Therefore, the idols are replaced every 12 years. The old idols are taken to a temple called Koili Vaikunth. They are immersed there.
