What are the Moidams of Assam? UNESCO has included it in the World Heritage List, know its specialty
New Delhi. Moidams located in Charaideo in India's northeastern state of Assam has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This announcement was made at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Delhi. Earlier, India had nominated Moidams to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023-24. It has become the first property in the Northeast to get a place in this prestigious list.
History and Characteristics of MoidamsThe people of the Tai-Ahom dynasty used to bury their community members after their death along with their favourite things in a mound-like pyramid-like structure, which is called Moidams. The history of Moidams is 600 years old. The Tai-Ahom dynasty ruled Assam for about 600 years. Moidams are semi-circular and mostly two-storeyed, made of clay, which were prepared in a special way.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the UNESCO team for this achievement. He said that the recognition of Moidams as a World Heritage Site will take the great history of Assam and Ahoms to the global platform. Along with this, the CM requested the PM to visit Moidams and experience their unreal divinity and beauty.
