History of Vat Savitri Vrat
According to Hindu mythology, the history of Vat Savitri is associated with the love of Savitri and her husband Satyavan. Savitri was the daughter of King Ashwapati and she chose Prince Satyavan, who was living in exile, as her husband. Sage Narada had predicted Satyavan's early death and said that he would not live more than a year after marriage. However, despite knowing everything, Savitri married Satyavan. When the predicted day of Satyavan's death came closer, Savitri did everything to keep her husband alive. After marriage, both of them started living happily.
Meanwhile, one day Satyavan suddenly fainted while cutting wood and then he died. After this, Savitri took a vow to bring back her husband's soul and make him alive again. When Yamraj started walking with Satyavan's soul, Savitri also started following him. Seeing her devotion and loyalty, Yamraj was impressed and asked her to ask for 3 boons. Savitri first asked for her father-in-law's eyesight and kingdom back and then asked for the boon.
Yamraj also granted this boon. After that she asked for the boon of becoming the mother of hundred sons. Yamraj granted this boon too but then Savitri said that how will she fulfil this boon without her husband. So finally Yamraj brought her husband Satyavan back to life and granted the boon of long life to both of them. This story of Savitri's love, devotion and loyalty towards her husband is celebrated by women even today in the form of Vat Savitri Vrat. Women of Hindu religion keep this fast every year to pray for the long life of their husbands and for the well-being of their family.
