Uganda will send four athletes to Xiamen Diamond League
Uganda will field four athletes for the season-opening World Athletics Diamond League in Xiamen, China on April 20.
Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) president Dominic Otuchette was quoted by Xinhua on Thursday as saying that four athletes, Dan Kibet, Oscar Chelimo, Winnie Nanyondo and Peruth Chemutai will compete at the World Athletics Diamond League.
After winning a silver medal at the African Games in Ghana last month, Chemutai has been entered into the 3,000 meters steeplechase, where she will compete against Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech and Ethiopia’s Sambo Almayev.
“I have prepared well and I am looking forward to racing in China,” said Chemutai, who won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Nanyondo will compete against the likes of Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and Ethiopia’s Habitum Alemu in the 1,500 metres, while Kibet and Chelimo will compete in the men’s 5,000 metres.
“We are hopeful that four of our athletes will perform well in China as some of them will be preparing for the Diamond League races and some will also be preparing for the Paris Olympics,” Otuchette said.
After the Xiamen leg, the second stop of the Diamond League will take place in Suzhou, China on April 27. The series will run until mid-September, with a short break for the Paris Olympics.
