Typhoon Shanshan Japan : Residents of southwestern Japan are being urged to remain on high alert for damaging winds and flooding. Typhoon Shanshan is expected to pick up speed and reach the Amami region by Wednesday. According to reports, the storm is currently moving west, but its exact path is difficult to forecast. The powerful storm may move slowly and bring heavy rain to relatively distant areas.

Wind speeds in the Amami region are forecast to exceed 140 kilometres per hour on Tuesday. On Wednesday, wind speeds could exceed 250 kilometres per hour, enough to destroy some houses.
Rescue preparations are underway across the country. Fishermen have anchored their ships at the port of Yawatahama City. Rice farmers in Okagaki City, Fukuoka Prefecture had to hastily harvest their crops.
