Two cheetah cubs die in Kuno, forest department team is investigating

Sheopur: Two cubs of African female cheetah Nirva were found dead and their mutilated bodies were recovered on Wednesday in Kuno National Park (KNP) in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh. A team of forest department staff, who monitor the movement of leopards, received signals through radio telemetry that Nirva was away from her den, following which they along with veterinarians reached the spot for inspection and found two mutilated cubs inside. Bodies were found.
After inspecting all possible locations inside the enclosure, they concluded that there was no evidence of the presence of any more cheetah cubs. There was confusion regarding how many cubs Nirva gave birth to.
Mohan Yadav had posted
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had earlier said on social media that Nirva had given birth to four cubs, but later he removed the post and said the forest department would soon confirm the exact number of newborns. Nirva is completely healthy.
Samples of the dead cubs have been collected and sent for testing, a forest department official said. The exact cause of his death will be known only after receiving the laboratory report. All other adult cheetahs and the 12 cubs are healthy.

What did the government say on the death of leopards?
The government told the House in February this year that four leopards, including Shaurya, brought from Namibia, died due to septicemia, a disease caused by blood infection. Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav gave this information to the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question. He told that Shaurya died on January 16 in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This is the tenth death of a leopard since leopards were introduced from Africa in India in 2022.
