Tough fight for BJP against DMK in Tamil Nadu, triangular fight on 39 Lok Sabha seats

21 MPs of DMK-Congress alliance returned

BJP is eyeing those 10 seats where there is crisis
The BJP has fielded its candidates on 22 seats, but has focused on 10 seats where votes are most likely to be divided in a triangular fight. In the last election, the BJP candidate had lost to the CPIM candidate on the Coimbatore seat, but he got the second highest number of 3.92 lakh votes. CPIM’s P.R. Natarajan got 5.71 lakh votes. Since AIADMK was in alliance at that time, there was no division of votes. This time, apart from DMK, both AIADMK and AIADMK are in the fray, so BJP is hopeful. Both Chennai North and South seats went to DMK, but Trikonia Jung may benefit in this election. In 2019, there was a direct contest between DMK and AIADMK in Vellore. DMK won by just 8 thousand votes. This time BJP is hopeful about that seat.
Modi called nine colleagues ‘Navratna’
To establish dominance in Tamil Nadu, BJP has sidelined the big parties and has included leaders from smaller parties as well who can decide the victory or defeat at the local level. Apart from BJP, there are nine other parties in the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu. PMK and TMCM are the two main allies in this. In 1996, it was TMCM that had destroyed the strongholds of both DMK and AIADMK. This time also BJP has the same hope. Other parties include former chief minister Panneerselvam’s group who broke away from AIADMK, AMMK, IJK, PNK, TMMK. Prime Minister Modi had called all of them Navratnas when he addressed a gathering in Tamil Nadu. BJP’s election chariot in Tamil Nadu will run with the help of Navaratnas.
Ghasna alliance got 38 seats in 2019
BJP opened its account in 2014, but BJP did not get a single seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. DMK alliance captured 38 out of 39 seats. Of these, DMK got 24, Congress eight, CPI two, CPIM two, VCK and Indian Union Muslim League one seat each. Five parties including AIADMK and BJP had contested the elections together in the NDA alliance. NDA alliance shaken. AIADMK got the only seat. BJP got only 3.66 percent votes. The NDA alliance got 30.57 percent votes, but the DMK-Congress alliance managed to get 53.15 percent votes. With that election, DMK made a strong comeback at the local level and laid the foundation for victory in the 2021 assembly elections.
DMK-AIADMK rule for five decades
DMK and AIADMK have been ruling Tamil Nadu for the last five decades. The main contest is between these two parties. DMK was led by Karunanidhi for years. Hence the leadership of AIADMK was first held by MGR and after his death in 1987, Jayalalitha took over. Jayalalitha strengthened the party and took the party to new heights in the state. The last time there was a clash between local and national parties in Tamil Nadu was in 1971. Of that time. Under the leadership of Kamaraj, Congress was in direct conflict with DMK.
In 1972, Tamil Nadu cinema superstar MGR founded a new party, the AIADMK, following sharp divisions within the DMK. In 1977, Congress was wiped out in the elections held after the Emergency and under the leadership of MGR, the party got 34 seats in that election. DMK won five seats. Karunanidhi made a comeback in 1980 and won 37 seats. In 1987, MGR captured 37 Lok Sabha seats in a competitive contest. After the death of MGR, Jayalalitha took charge of the party and won 38 seats in 1989. Recaptured all 39 seats in 1991. With 60 percent vote share, all opposition parties including DMK were wiped out. In 1999, DMK won 26 seats and AIADMK won 13 seats. In 2004, the DMK won all 39 seats, in 2009 the DMK won 27 seats and Jayalalitha’s AIADMK won 12 seats. In 2014, when Modi wave was going on in the entire country, Jayalalitha wave was going on in Tamil Nadu. He won 37 seats. BJP got one seat.
