The dispute started when thousands of protesters reached the police station in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh to register a report of the incident that happened in Maharashtra without permission. Police officials tried to convince the protesters, including the city's Additional Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh, SDM Akhil Rathore and police station in-charge Arvind Kujur.

In the viral video on social media, it can be clearly seen that police station in-charge Arvind Kujur is explaining to Haji Shahzad Ali's elder brother Councilor Azad and Maulana Irfan Chishti inside the police station. They were told that since the case is of Maharashtra, the FIR will have to be registered there. After this, the protesters got agitated and the policemen took them out of the police station. In the viral video, Maulana Irfan Chishti was seen saying, “Aap humein ghan chaa do” and then he said, “Ab main bolunga nahi.” Maulana's provocative statement further agitated the crowd, after which they started pelting stones on the police in a planned manner.
