The Allahabad High Court has adjourned the hearing of MP Afzal Ansari's Gangster Act appeal to June 3.
The Allahabad High Court has adjourned the hearing of Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari's appeal against the Gangster Act to June 3 next month. M.P. has challenged the sentence passed by the Ghazipur court in a case under the Gangster Act. A case was registered against him after the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Roy in 2005. At the same time, the court has accepted the request made by MP's lawyer for more time to file objections on the plea seeking increase in punishment in the gangster case. Along with the current criminal appeal, the court is also hearing an appeal by the state government and Krishnanand Rai's son Piyush Rai seeking enhancement of Afzal's sentence in the same case. The court, which will hear the case on the 3rd of next month, sought time from the court to file objections on the appeal filed by Piyush Kumar Roy and the state government. Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh Ansari's lawyer was given a week's time in this regard. After that, the next hearing of the case will be held on June 3. Afzal Ansari was found guilty under the Gangster Act, MP Afzal Ansari was convicted by Ghazipur MP-MLA court on April 29, 2023 last year. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment and a fine of 1 lakh rupees. Afzal then appealed to the High Court as he became ineligible as an MP. The High Court granted bail to Afzal on 24 July 2023, but refused to stay his sentence in the case. As a result, his MP was not reinstated. Also, his election campaign also ended in defeat.
