Col Philip Ingram, a former British Army intelligence officer, told the Telegraph that it was impossible to estimate the number of Chinese intelligence agents in the UK.
Article 7 of China’s National Intelligence Law states that all Chinese organisations must “support, assist and cooperate” with Chinese intelligence efforts, which means that every citizen can be openly used by the Chinese state to collect information, with or without their knowledge.
Media reports say that Chinese agents are spread across various sectors including education, students, lecturers, businessmen and art fields.
In October, MI5 chief Ken McCallum said that 20,000 British citizens had been contacted on LinkedIn by Chinese government agencies in the hope of stealing industrial or technical secrets.
Chinese spies also work in the embassy
