1. Most common cause of spinal cord injuries?
The most prevalent causes behind spinal cord injuries are motor vehicle accidents, falls, violence, and sports injuries. These traumatic events can cause damage to the spinal cord, leading to loss of function, sensation, and mobility.
2. Immediate steps to diagnose and treat?
Immediate steps include stabilising the spine, assessing neurological function, and ordering imaging tests (X-rays, CT, MRI). Treatment involves immobilization, surgery (if necessary), and medication to manage pain, blood pressure, and respiratory function.
3. Role of rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation helps individuals with spinal cord injuries regain strength, mobility, and independence. It includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, as well as psychological support and education on managing daily activities.
4. Common complications or secondary conditions?
Common complications include pressure sores, urinary tract infections, respiratory problems, and deep vein thrombosis. Secondary conditions like chronic pain, spasticity, and depression can also occur.
5. Impact on mental health and well-being?
Spinal cord injuries can lead to anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and decreased self-esteem. Emotional support, counselling, and therapy are essential to address these concerns and promote overall well-being.
6. Emerging technologies’ impact?
Emerging technologies like stem cell therapy, prosthetics, and brain-computer interfaces, along with established treatments such as baclofen pumps and spinal cord stimulators, offer promising solutions for spinal cord injuries. These innovations may improve motor function, sensation, and independence, enhancing the quality of life for individuals with SCI.
Baclofen pumps can help manage spasticity and muscle spasms, while spinal cord stimulators can alleviate chronic pain. Together, these advancements provide new hope for individuals with spinal cord injuries, enabling them to regain control and independence in their lives.
