Shani Dev: Did You Know That The Sight of Shani Dev is Considered Inauspicious? Know the Secret Behind This?
Shani Dev’swife hadcursed him
According to Hmavaivarta Purana, in his youth, Shani’s father Suryadev married him to the daughter of Chitraratha. That Sati-Sadhvi woman was always engrossed in penance and was extremely bright.
One day after taking a bath, she approached Shanidev with the desire of having a son, but Shanidev was engrossed in the meditation of Lord Shri Krishna and asked her to wait. He waited for a long time and eventually got tired of waiting. Knowing that her menstruation had failed, she became angry and cursed Shanidev that from today onwards whoever you look at will have bad luck. After losing his mind, Shanidev tried to convince his wife but now she was not able to free herself from the curse and hence started repenting. From that day onwards Shanidev started living with his head bowed, because he did not want any harm to happen to anyone.

Shani Dev looked at Ganesh ji
According to Brahmavaivartapuran, the reason for separation of Ganesha’s head from his body has been attributed to Saturn or Shani Dev. The story goes that, Maa Parvati had observed a fast called ‘Punyak’ to get a son and with the effect of this fast she got Ganesh as her son. The entire Devlok came to Shivlok to greet Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati and bless the child. Ultimately all the gods met Bal Ganesha, blessed him and started leaving. But Shanidev neither saw child Ganesha nor went near him. On this Parvati interrupted Shanidev. Shanidev told Mother Durga about his curse. Goddess Parvati said to Shanaishchar – ‘You look at me and my child. Taking religion as witness, virtuous Shanidev thought of seeing the child but not the child’s mother. He looked at the child’s face out of the corner of his left eye. As soon as Shani saw him, the baby’s head got separated from the body. Seeing this condition of her child, Maa Parvati is said to have fainted.
Ganesh was then called Gajanan
Then, to help Maa Parvati out from this trauma, Shri Hari, riding on his vehicle Garuda, set out in search of the child’s head and after cutting the head of an elephant with his Sudarshan Chakra, reached Kailash. Going to Parvati, Lord Vishnu made the elephant’s head beautiful and attached it to the boy’s torso. Then God in the form of Brahma gave life to the child with the call of Brahmagyan and alerted Parvati and blessed her by placing the child in her lap. Ganesha is also called Gajanana because he wears the head of an elephant.
