SEBI: SEBI has expressed concern over the loss of crores to the country's exchequer
SEBI: It is difficult to recover Rs 76,293 crore, which is 4% higher than last year, said market regulator Sebi. A large number of cases pending before court-appointed committees are still stuck. Despite all possible efforts, it is very difficult to get this money back. In its 2023 annual report, Sebi said that declaring these dues difficult to collect is only an administrative measure and does not prevent efforts to recover the money. SEBI has identified 807 cases under DTR till March 31, 2024, totaling Rs 76,293 crore. Last year, 692 such cases were reported, totaling Rs 73,287 crore. This year, out of 807 cases, 36 cases are still pending in various courts including NCLT and NCLAT, involving Rs 12,199 crore. Apart from this, 60 cases are pending with court-appointed committees, totaling Rs 59,970 crore. These two categories together account for 95% of the total uncollected amount. Currently, around Rs 1.03 lakh crore is pending with the market regulator Sebi. SEBI also reserves the right to recover the penalty imposed by its Adjudicating Authority. In 2023-24, SEBI took up 342 new cases and the number was 144 in 2022-23. Most of these cases relate to violations of securities laws such as price manipulation and insider trading.
