Heeramandi: Richa Chadha grew furious with Sanjay Leela Bhansali because he lost patience when she failed to meet his expectations for the performance in ‘Masoom Dil Hai Mera.’

Constitution: Film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali talked about an exchange with actor Richa Chadha while working on the set of Constitution: The Diamond Bazaarhis first OTT series. It’s well known that the filmmaker expects his performers to give their all to fully realize his vision. Chadha, who plays Lajwanti aka Lajjo in the period drama, struggled to meet his expectations for the dance sequence in ‘My heart is innocent.’ Sanjay Leela Bhansali recalled the time when the ‘fukrey‘ actor practised a sequence several times but still couldn’t seem to get it. He revealed that the mom-to-be’s tears and humiliation in the last shot were real.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali remembered clearly the day of the filming when he had been disappointed with Richa’s performance in an interview with India Today. No wonder she poured her heart and soul while performing in ‘My heart is innocent.’ He became so enraged that he lost control and yelled at the actor during an argument. Richa also got irritated at that point. “That was a special moment. But unka baith nahi raha tha. She was trying, but I wasn’t getting what I wanted. After a point, I got a little upset. I said, ‘You’ve rehearsed it, but it’s still not falling in place, you’re not getting the state of mind.’ I got a little angry, and she became upset as well” he said.

Richa was able to convey the rage and humiliation required to represent the emotions of her on-screen character, which is why Sanjay Leela Bhansali described the scene as exceptional. “The anger on her face was so special. That moment was a result of what I said to her and what she said to me. In all the songs I’ve shot, big numbers, this is one of the rare moments of the actor feeling the humiliation of the scene that she went through rather than feeling the humiliation of me getting angry and saying, ‘How many takes will you want?’ The anger was from both sides, but you need to be in that state of mind. Another actor might have stormed off the set in anger, but Richa and I both understood that the shot is more important, the song is more important, the scene is more important, the series is more important than either of us” he continued.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali also claimed that Richa and him hugged after the shot. After the moment, he said, the entire team clapped and they both apologised to one another. Additionally, the Heeramandi director discussed the significance of ‘arriving at that moment.’

Richa Chadha said in an earlier interview that she had previously been forced to redo a shot 99 times for it to not even make the final cut. The cast and crew have frequently discussed Bhansali’s demanding side, but the director maintained that he just gets ‘obsessed’ with realizing his vision on set and acknowledged that he gets angry when he doesn’t get his way.
