On August 9, a junior doctor was gang-raped and murdered at the RG Garh Medical College in Kolkata, following which junior doctors staged a protest demanding justice for the victim. State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the protest site on Saturday. As soon as Mamata Banerjee reached the stage of movement, slogans of 'Justice for the junior doctor' and 'We want justice' started echoing everywhere. Chief Minister Banerjee asked the protesters to calm down. She said, “If you tell me what you want, I will be happy, I support your movement, I am also a part of the student movement. “I myself come from the student movement,” said the Chief Minister, “I myself have come forward through the student movement, I have struggled a lot in my life, I understand your struggle. I am not worried about my status. It was raining all last night and you are sitting here and protesting, I am also very troubled by this incident, the way you are sitting here, I am mentally affected. It has been 33-34 days since the Kolkata rape case, Chief Minister, I have not slept through the night for 33-34 days, when you are on the road, I have to stay awake like a watchman. Asking them to return to work, Chief Minister Mamata dissolved all patient welfare associations. Principal said to junior doctor, you start working and I will consider your demands. The Chief Minister further said, I am not ruling alone. I will talk to the authorities, give me some time, I will not do you any injustice. Back to work, lots of people die. “Criminals will definitely be punished” said the Chief Minister, I will definitely address your demands, whoever the culprits will be definitely punished. I ask you for some time. The state government will not take any action against you (striking doctors), I request you to return to work, all the work related to the development, infrastructure, security of the hospital will be started and will be done in the future. The Chief Minister assured the junior doctors that the Chief Minister will chair all hospital patient welfare committees. There will be junior doctor, senior doctor, nurse and police.
