The Congress Working Committee members on Saturday passed a resolution appointing Rahul Gandhi as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. This is the first time since the 2014 rule that the Congress party has got the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The Bharatiya Janata-led National Democratic Alliance won 293 seats in the recently concluded elections and is ready to form the government. The meeting was held in the expanded Congress Working Committee (CWC) chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. In this meeting, the contribution of party president Mallikarjuna Kharge, former president Sonia Gandhi, general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha elections was appreciated. A resolution in this regard was also passed in the meeting. Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi, General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Former President Rahul Gandhi, Organization General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and members of the executive committee and senior leaders attended the extended executive committee meeting. The executive committee also passed a resolution that Rahul Gandhi should take over as the Leader of the Opposition. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said: A committee will be formed to study the states where our performance is below expectations. After the study, the committee will submit its report to the Congress President. “This meeting of the Congress Working Committee has given such a powerful mandate to the people of our country to protect this democracy, protect the constitution of this republic and promote socio-economic justice,” says the resolution passed by the Prime Minister's Moral Failure Task Force. The welfare of the poor was at the heart of our campaign and we underlined the need for a nationwide social and economic census for social justice, empowerment and addressing the aspirations of the youth and farmers. This general election result is really the result of our collective efforts. The Congress Working Committee appreciates the All India Alliance and thanks its parties in various states for contesting this election in a strong manner. The Indian Alliance raised its flag with the help of partner parties in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. All India will play a major role in the 18th Lok Sabha.
