Purnia News: Site not available for multi-storey market in Purnia

Purnia News: Purnia district has come a long way in its development journey. Surrounded by hundreds of villages on all four sides, this district has a place in the hearts of not only the villagers coming towards the city but also the people coming from other states. As a result, there is no corner left in the district headquarters that cannot be seen densely populated. In the early days, considering the increasing population and its needs, administrative efforts were taken at many places. Everything from transportation to markets grew. Along these lines, a multi-storied market was planned in the main part of the city, where efforts were made to ensure availability of all types of essential commodities. For this the main responsibility in the city was given to the District Council. In the 80s, a plan was developed to convert the multi-storied building into a market. A blueprint for the market was prepared and its construction started. During the construction of the first floor, a total of six floors were prepared. Because of this, it is also called the multi-storied market. Residents of this market started feeling like they had a glimpse of a market like a metropolitan city, but today, though its name is a multi-storied market, this market is limited to only one floor. The construction of the multi-storied market started during the then Deputy Development Commissioner Ajith Kumar's tenure, while the traders here say that no attention was paid to maintenance after construction. The market was formally launched in 1987 after a platform was constructed. At that time, the roadside vendors around the Governor's office were given space on a priority basis. Due to the construction done according to the plan, 15 shops were arranged facing each other in four rows planned in this entire area. A total of around 120 shops were prepared. With various resources, the traders started their shops with great enthusiasm, but after that, as the other floors above could not be built, no maintenance work was done in this market. Over the past 36 years, shoppers at this market have considered any repairs they need at their own expense. Today, all the thick heavy wires placed over the roof to build the deck are being damaged by thieves. Several bars are cut from the roots. Due to the lack of coordination between the officials and the shopkeepers, the shopkeepers are complaining that there is no complete coordination in all the meetings held regarding this market. His proposals and his issues were ignored. Only revenue is collected. Today the market has moved down from the main road. The drains are raised. During the rainy season, water seeps from the roofs and stagnates inside the market. At some places the roof is also collapsing. There is no proper toilet facility for the women who come here. There are pay toilets and urinals nearby but women do not like to go there as they are unmaintained. Mistakes in the map Some traders said: Some people have messed up the map of the multi-storey market made according to the map. He says that in the prescribed drawing, shutters of all the shops were fixed inwards only. Space was reserved outside for vehicle parking and bicycle stands, but later many shuttered the exterior wall to the road. Due to this, there were two types of losses, one was the loss of parking space and the second was the negative impact on the business of traders within the market. District Council President Wahida Sarwar said: There are some problems related to the shops in the multi-storey market. The building is very old. It is very important to work on it. Correspondence has been exchanged at departmental and state level on various matters. There is no financial deficit in Zilla Parishad accounts.
