The landslide in Wayanad has shocked the people. People have not been able to recover from it till today. The death toll in the devastating landslides in Wayanad's Mundakkai and Suralmala areas on July 30 is over 300. Many have gone missing due to massive landslides. Amidst all this, a police officer has described the incident as an eyewitness. Two tourists from Odisha were trapped in the landslide. One of them was crying for help with a broken limb and another with torn clothes and injuries. Later, Mabadi police station police officer Jiblu Rahman rescued both the tourists from the rubble on the spot. Rehman added that there were two more people further up the river. He went up the river to look for them both. As Rahman moved upwards, he heard a loud noise and felt the landslide again. Left with no other option, he ran upstairs for his safety. He saw the water rushing down, carrying mud, rocks and trees. Rehman said those in front of him were swept away by the debris. He was unable to help them. Forest officials are already assisting at the spot. Mappadi Deputy Forest Range Officer K. Pradeep said: Our forest department went to the spot on the call given by the people of the area that elephants had entered the residential area. We went there to drive the elephants back into the forest. On reaching the spot, he saw the rising water in the river and warned people to move to safer places. Pradeep said when we were coming back we heard a noise and the first landslide happened. People started running for safety and we turned on our search lights and vehicle headlights to find their way to safety. The forest department evacuated more than 45 people safely.
