Ohio shocker: Woman who left her toddler home alone for 10 days sentenced to life over her murder
The woman has been identified as Kristel Candelario and she received a life sentence without parole on Monday for the murder of her daughter Jailyn.
According to Cuyahoga County court, Candelario was given punishment after she was found guilty for one count of aggravated murder and one count of endangering children. The shocking incident took place in June last year.
Toddler died of starvation and severe dehydration
Kristel Candelario departed for a trip on June 6 last year and left Jailyn at home unattended in Cleveland. Upon returning home on June 16, Candelario found her daughter unresponsive. She immediately sought help from police officers who upon reaching the spot declared the toddler dead. The cause of the toddler’s death was said to be due to starvation and severe dehydration. The 16-month-old had lost more than 3 kg when found dead at home. Two months before, her weight was 9 kg.
Probe revealed Candelario was guilty
In a full-fledged probe, the Ohio police found that Candelario was on a 10-day vacation to Detroit and Puerto Rico and her daughter was home alone for the same period. Candelario was arrested on June 17 and booked under murder and other related criminal offenses.
Candelario suffering from depression
According to reports, Candelario has been suffering from depression and other mental health issues. “I have lost my baby, Jailyn. I am hurt and I am not justifying my actions. No one knows what I was going through and how much I was suffering. God and my daughter have forgiven me,” Candelario said after she was given life imprisonment by the court. It is worth mentioning here that the accused woman was terminated by her employer after her arrest in June last year. She used to work as a building substitute at Cleveland Elementary School Citizens Academy in Glenville.
