Manipur: AFSPA should be implemented across the state… Demand of 10 Kuki MLAs including BJP to recover arms.
Violence has erupted again in Manipur in the last one month. Meanwhile, 10 Kuki MLAs of the Manipur Assembly on Thursday demanded the implementation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Manipur. AFSPA should be enforced across the state to recover stolen weapons, he said. These MLAs include 7 MLAs from the ruling BJP-led coalition. On November 14, the Center reimposed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas of Manipur, including violence-hit Jiribam. The Union Home Ministry has informed that this decision has been taken considering the ongoing unstable situation there. 'This is a long overdue measure to curb violence', 10 Kuki MLAs in a joint statement demanded that AFSPA imposed by the Home Ministry be implemented in other areas. The statement said, 'There is a need to review the imposition of AFSPA as per orders dated November 14, 2024 and extend the Act to the remaining 13 police jurisdictions.' He asserted that since May 3 last year, more than 6,000 sophisticated weapons have been looted by the Meites. At the same time, AFSPA should be implemented across the state for recovery. Because it is a long overdue measure to prevent violence. Tribal MLAs have criticized the Jan Abhiyan resolution. The resolution calls for a mass campaign within 7 days against the Kuki militants responsible for the killing of 3 women and 3 children in Jiribam district. The move has been taken in view of the recent killings in Jiribam district. The recommendation said that Kuki militants should be declared an 'unlawful organisation' within 7 days. Also, a request has been made to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
