Mandar will get a geographical code and Kumla village will get 'producer company' recognition.
Abhishek Roy, Ranchi: Like Assam's 'Bihu Dhol', Jharkhand's traditional musical instrument 'Mandar' is in line to get Geographical Indication (GI). For this, the Kumla district administration has also applied to the Geocode Registration Center located in Chennai. This entire exercise was started in 2023 by the then Gumla DC Sushant Gaur. It is being monitored by the current DC Karna Satyarthi. Mander will probably get his GI tag this year. After this, Jharkhand will have a monopoly on this instrument. Apart from this, Jharjata village of Raidih block of Kumla will also get recognition as a 'Mandar Producing Company'. Nandlal Naik, Council Member of Sangeet-Natya Academy, said that 'Mandar' has a very special place among the traditional musical instruments of Jharkhand. Its vibrancy and the sweetness of the raga emanating from it is unique. This is the only musical instrument not found in any other country or state. Jharjata village of Kumla is known only for construction of mandar. About 22 families belonging to this village, all the fourth generation members are engaged in making mandharas. What is special is that all the equipments used to make mandar are found only in the plateau areas of Kumla. Mandarin shell is made from the mud of the Shanga River. The sound of 'dung' is heard as the women here prepare the ranga by grinding it with their hands to be spread over the leather mat. Apart from this, people also prepare thri, pati, thana, pora tora, disna karan, bali karan, kulu (for rubbing round stones), natural colors and dangles used in Mandar with their own hands.
