Making a detailed plan to end the war with Russia: Zelensky
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky says he is drawing up a detailed plan to end the war with Russia. Zelensky was speaking at a press conference in Kyiv with Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar on Friday. “It is very important for us to have a plan to end the war that is supported by the majority of countries in the world,” the Ukrainian president said. “This is a diplomatic path we are working on.” Earlier on Thursday, at an EU summit in Brussels, Zelensky said he would present a “detailed plan” to end the war in a matter of months. “We don’t have much time,” he said, pointing to the rising death toll among soldiers and civilians.
There are currently no talks going on between Ukraine and Russia to end the war. Judging by the public statements of Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two countries still seem to be at odds with each other on the terms of a peace deal. Ukraine has repeatedly said that Russia must withdraw its troops from its internationally recognized territory before talks can begin. These areas include Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. At the same time, Putin, who launched an attack on Ukraine in February 2022, is demanding that Ukraine immediately surrender by evacuating even more land in its east and south, which is now occupied by Russia.
Zelensky had called an international summit
Zelensky hosted an international summit in Switzerland earlier this month. Russia was not invited to this conference. The purpose of this conference was to garner support for Ukraine. More than 90 countries participated in this two-day summit. Most countries also agreed on a statement, which emphasized the need to respect Ukraine's “territorial integrity” in any agreement. But some major countries like India did not agree and some other countries like Russia's ally China boycotted the summit in protest against Russia not being invited.
Russian troops are slowly advancing on the battlefield, claiming to have captured another village on Friday. Currently Russia has occupied about 25 percent of Ukraine.
