Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Under the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, 36.88 percent voting was reported till 11 am on Saturday in eight districts of West Bengal. The polling in Tamluk, Gandhi, Kattal, Jhargram, Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura and Bishnupur constituencies started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. A total of 1,45,34,228 voters, including 73,63,273 male, 71,70,822 female and 133 'transgender' voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise across 15,600 polling booths in the state. 79 candidates in the fray: According to the official, 79 candidates are in the fray out of which Bankura and Jhargram have 13 candidates each. After this, Purulia (12) and Medinipur and Tamluk have nine candidates each. As per the information received, seven candidates each are contesting from Bishnupur and Katal constituencies. These include Bengali actor Dev and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay. Mamata Banerjee: 16.54 percent polling in 8 Lok Sabha constituencies till 9 am on Saturday when Mamata Banerjee challenged the Calcutta High Court's order in the OBC certificate case in the Supreme Court. The highest voter turnout in Tamluk was 19.07 percent, the official said. This was followed by 18.56 percent in Bishnupur, 18.27 percent in Kadal, 17.69 percent in Bangura, 16.22 percent in Jhargram, 15.45 percent in Gandhi, 14.58 percent in Medinipur and 12.68 percent in Purulia. Onda's Nikunjpur: 36 percent polling till 11 am from where Mamata Banerjee was attacked. Katla got maximum 39.21 percent votes. Purulia recorded the lowest voter turnout of 33.16 percent. A total of 919 companies of central forces and over 29,000 state police personnel have been deployed in this phase.
