Kolkata became champion due to this one mistake of Hyderabad, Pat Cummins will regret it for the rest of his life
New Delhi. In a thrilling final in Chennai, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad to clinch their third IPL title. The match saw a disappointing batting performance from SRH, which eventually handed KKR an easy win. SRH won the toss and decided to bat first, a decision that backfired spectacularly. The team struggled right from the start, with openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head both failing to make an impact. Head got out on zero and Sharma could only score 2 runs before being sent back to the pavilion. Other key batsmen including Rahul Tripathi (9), Aiden Markram (20) and Nitish Reddy (13) also got out cheaply. Wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen scored 16 runs but could not secure the innings. SRH were bowled out for 113 in 18.3 overs.
KKR's bowling attack capitalised on SRH's batting collapse, making it difficult for any batsman to settle in. The modest target of 114 was chased down with ease by KKR, who reached the target in just 10.3 overs for the loss of two wickets.
KKR's road to the title was impressive throughout the tournament. They were the first team to secure a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs and had earlier booked their place in the final by defeating SRH in the first qualifier. This win continues an interesting streak as the team that won the first qualifier went on to win the title for the seventh consecutive season.
