Kolkata airport closed for 21 hours, dozens of trains cancelled, know what is the preparation to deal with ‘Remal’ cyclone – Read
The pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal has turned into a cyclone. Cyclone Remal is currently 350 km away from Sagar Island. Due to cyclone Remal, flight services at Kolkata airport will remain closed for 21 hours from 12 noon on Sunday i.e. till 9 am on Monday. Along with this, dozens of trains of Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway have been cancelled.
In view of the Ramal cyclone, a red alert has been issued in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly on May 26. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected at many places. Orange alert has been issued in Nadia, West Medinipur, East Burdwan.
Due to cyclone Remal, Kolkata airport will remain closed for 21 hours. Due to this, no flight will take off from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport from 12 noon on Sunday to 9 am on Monday. This will cause trouble to about fifty thousand air passengers. As a precaution, all domestic and international flight operations have been suspended.
The storm will hit at midnight on May 26
On an average, more than 300 flights take off from Kolkata airport every day. The Kolkata Airport Authority said that hundreds of flights have been cancelled due to this incident. Apart from this, airport officials have taken special precautions to avoid any damage during the storm.
This cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal will take the form of a severe cyclone by the morning of 26 May. It will hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal between Sagar Island and Khepupara at midnight on 26 May. The Meteorological Department says that the wind will blow at a speed of 110 to 120 km. The wind speed will be 135 km per hour. There is a possibility of a storm blowing at a speed of 90 km per hour in Kolkata.
Alert issued in view of Ramal Chakravarti cyclone
By Saturday night, the low pressure is expected to turn into a cyclonic storm. Alipore Meteorological Department’s Deputy Officer Somnath Dutta said that after becoming a cyclone, it may hit the ground on Sunday night. Then its speed will be 110 to 120 km per hour. Temporarily, the wind speed can increase to 135 km per hour. It will fall between Sagardwip of this country and Khepupara of Bangladesh.
These districts of Bengal will be affected
Due to the effect of this ‘Remal’, rain is expected in all the districts of South Bengal. On Sunday, a red alert has been issued in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore. Very heavy rain is expected in these six districts including Kolkata. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. There is a possibility of wind blowing at a speed of 110 to 120 km per hour in North and South 24 Parganas. Temporarily, the wind speed may increase to 130 km per hour.
Heavy rain alert in Kolkata
In the remaining four districts including Kolkata, the storm can blow at a speed of 70 to 80 km per hour. Temporary increase in wind speed can lead to a storm of 90 km per hour. Orange alert is effective in West Medinipur, East Burdwan, Nadia. Also, the storm can blow at a speed of 34 to 45 km per hour. Heavy rains can occur in the remaining southern districts. A yellow alert has been issued there. In such a situation, Kolkata Airport decided to control air traffic.
