Justice Amit Sharma recused himself from Umar Khalid's bail hearing and the case will go to a separate session

Jawaharlal Nehru University student Umar Khalid has been jailed on charges of conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi. Umar Khalid's bail plea was scheduled to come up for hearing in the Delhi High Court on Monday, but the hearing has been postponed as Justice Amit Sharma has recused himself from the hearing. Umar Khalid's bail plea case was listed in the Delhi High Court bench of Justice Pradeepa M Singh and Justice Amit Sharma, which was scheduled to come up for hearing today i.e. Monday, but now Justice Amit Sharma has recused himself from the case. The hearing was adjourned after Justice Amit Sharma recused himself from the hearing. A separate bench will now hear Omar Khalid's bail plea on July 24. Earlier, Justice Amit Sharma recused himself from hearing bail pleas filed by Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider and other convicts in the Delhi riots case. After that, he has now stayed away from Umar Khalid's bail plea case. Umar Khalid was arrested in September 2020 and charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting and various offenses under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He is in jail since 2020. This is the second round of Umar Khalid's bail plea. A lower court had denied him bail for the first time in March 2022. Following this, Umar Khalid approached the High Court, after which the court refused to grant relief in October 2022. In May 2023, Umar Khalid approached the Supreme Court. The court issued a notice to the Delhi Police on the matter and sought its response, but the hearing on the plea was adjourned several times, with a bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Pankaj Mittal scheduled to hear the case on 14 February 2024. , but Umar Khalid withdrew his bail plea in the Supreme Court. Khalid's lawyer Kapil Sibal informed the court that the bail plea was being withdrawn. Due to change of circumstances we wish to withdraw the petition and approach the trial Court for appropriate relief. However, on May 28, the trial court rejected Umar Khalid's second bail plea.
