IPL 2024: Philip Salt breaks Sourav Ganguly’s 14-year-old record

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Philip Salt has broken the 14-year-old record of former franchise captain Sourav Ganguly during the match against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

27-year-old English opener Salt once again thrashed the opposition bowlers and played a quick inning of 68 runs with the help of 7 fours and 5 sixes in 33 balls. With this, he has scored a total of 344 runs in six innings at Eden Gardens Stadium in the current season and has left behind Ganguly’s record of scoring most runs at Eden Gardens in one season of IPL.

Salt now holds the record for scoring the most runs in a single season at Eden Gardens. Before him in 2010, veteran left-handed batsman Ganguly had scored 331 runs in seven innings at Eden Gardens and held this record for 14 years.

In 2019, KKR’s star all-rounder Andre Russell came close to Ganguly’s record when he scored 311 runs in 7 innings.

Overall, in IPL 2024, Salt has so far scored 392 runs in 9 innings of 9 matches with the highest score of 89. His strike rate was 180.64 and average was 49.

Talking about the match, in this match Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided to bat first. However, his decision proved wrong and Delhi team could score only 153 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Kuldeep Yadav scored the highest unbeaten 35 runs for Delhi. Apart from Kuldeep, Pant scored 27 runs.

For KKR, Varun Chakraborty took 3 wickets for 16 runs in 4 overs. Apart from Varun, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana took 2-2 wickets and Sunil Narine, Mitchell Starc took 1-1 wicket.

In reply, KKR won the match by scoring 157 runs at the loss of 3 wickets in 16.3 overs, thanks to the half-century of Phil Salt (68) and the innings of captain Shreyas Iyer (33 not out) and Venkatesh Iyer (23).

For Delhi, Akshar Patel took 2 wickets and Kuldeep Yadav took 1 wicket.

With this win, KKR has now moved to the second position in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points, while Delhi is at the sixth position with 12 points.
