Starting April 2, the US will implement reciprocal tariffs, mirroring the duties imposed by other countries on American goods. Former US President Donald Trump announced the move during a joint session of Congress, specifically calling out India’s “higher than 100 per cent” tariffs on US automotive imports. He stated, “Whatever they tax us, we will tax them.”

While electronic goods were not explicitly mentioned in Trump’s speech, reports suggest the new tariffs could impact consumer electronicsincluding smartphones and laptops.
Impact on Apple and India’s Manufacturing Ecosystem
India has emerged as a key production hub for Apple, steadily increasing local manufacturing since 2017. Initially, only base models of iPhones were assembled in India, but Apple now produces a wider range, including the latest iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. The upcoming iPhone 16e will be assembled in India for both domestic sales and exports.
