Indian Railways is stepping into a new phase of eco-friendly transportation with the introduction of hydrogen-powered trains. After moving from diesel to electric engines, this marks another major step toward cleaner and greener travel. The country’s first hydrogen train is being built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. This hydrogen-powered train will play a key role in supporting India’s goal of zero carbon emissions by utilizing clean energy.
The train will run using fuel cells, which generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, releasing only water vapour as a byproduct—making it a zero-emission transport solution. This eco-friendly innovation will place India among the global leaders in green mobility, alongside nations like Germany, France, China, and the United Kingdom.
To support this initiative, the Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs 2,800 crore in the 2023-24 financial year to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains. The first hydrogen train set is expected to be ready this month. Earlier this year in January, U Subba Rao, General Manager of ICF, mentioned that the team was actively working on this important project and the train was expected to be ready by March 25.
In addition to this achievement, India has successfully developed the world’s most powerful hydrogen train engine. While hydrogen trains in other countries typically have engine capacities between 500 to 600 horsepower (HP), India has set a new benchmark by creating an engine with a massive 1,200 HP capacity.
The first hydrogen train will operate under Northern Railway’s Delhi Division and is expected to run on the 89-kilometer-long Jind-Sonipat route. This development highlights India’s commitment to advancing sustainable transportation and reducing its environmental impact. The train is expected to achieve a maximum speed of 140 km/h, offering a swift, sustainable, and comfortable journey for passengers.
