In the country where Hamas's biggest supporters are sitting, poverty has made life miserable for the people there | Lebanon

In Lebanon, the country of Hezbollah, which supports Hamas the most in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, poverty has broken the back of the entire population. According to the report released, Lebanon has been battling economic crisis for a long time.
According to the World Bank, the number of people living below the poverty line in Lebanon has risen to 44% of the total population, due to which the Syrian refugee population is being affected the most. The same report states that poverty in Lebanon has increased more than 3 times in the last 10 years.
The Israel-Hamas war is the big reason for this
While the poverty in the country was 12 percent in 2012, it has increased to 44 percent in the year 2024. International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation Ernesta Ramirez Rigo said that the current situation in the country is being further aggravated by the war between Israel and Hamas, due to this war and the refugee crisis in Lebanon, the economic situation is going from bad to worse. Lebanon’s Hezbollah is helping Hamas in this war, due to which there is a war-like situation in Israel and Lebanon as well.

IMF bailout will improve the situation
Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October last year, Hezbollah has attacked several Israeli targets, after which many attacks keep happening on the Israel-Lebanon border every day. Some people believe that an IMF bailout will be needed to improve this situation, a bailout means taking financial help from the IMF is the only last resort to avoid the collapse of the country’s economy, but after reaching an initial agreement with the IMF in the year 2022, the Lebanese authorities have made only a limited progress in the reforms required to finalize this agreement. But the World Bank report said that Lebanon is improving its situation at a slow pace, but all this can be spoiled due to the Israel-Hamas war because Lebanon’s economic situation is currently very fragile, which can go towards recession due to this war.
Lebanese have nothing in the name of savings
However, the IMF delegation that visited Beirut this week said that there has been some improvement in the economic situation but this improvement will not end the economic crisis. The country’s economic crisis has seen the Lebanese people’s savings evaporate, the situation got worse when the currency lost up to 95 percent of its value, after which the banks locked the savings of most depositors. Research found that 73 percent of Lebanese and 100 percent of non-Lebanese are considered poor.
