How did JDU's Ajay Mandal defeat Congress in Bhagalpur? Ajit Sharma can have only one lead in 6 assembly constituencies.
The counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections ended peacefully at the Government Polytechnic College, Bhagalpur on Tuesday. The counting of votes started at 8 am and continued till evening. NDA candidate Ajay Kumar Mandal (JDU) won the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 1,04,868 votes. Congress was hoping to win its stronghold seat after a long time, but that hope was dashed by Ajit Sharma's defeat. Bhagalpur saw a clash between Ajay Mandal and Ajit Sharma, with the JDU putting its faith in its sitting MP Ajay Mandal and fielding him on the ticket. There was a lot of buzz among people whether Ajay Mandal could register a win this time or not. People here expressed the possibility of seeing the effect of anti-incumbency action. After Ajit Sharma got ticket from Congress, Ajit Sharma started campaign by attacking Ajay Mandal. Ajay hoped that the public would elect him as a replacement for Mandal. But during the counting of votes, the opposite scenario was observed. Ajay Mandal continued to lead the race. Ajay Mandal secured a total of 5,36,031 votes in 5 assembly constituencies. Ajit Sharma, the Congress candidate of the Indian Alliance, was defeated by securing 4,31,163 votes. Assembly wise, Ajit Sharma is the MLA of Bhagalpur Assembly and he got the lead in this assembly. In the remaining 5 assembly constituencies of Kahalgaon, Birpaindi, Gopalpur, Bihpur and Nathnagar, only JTU's Ajay Mandal is leading. That is, Ajit Sharma managed to garner more popular support in the assembly constituency including Bhagalpur Urban, but in other assemblies only Ajay Mandal dominated.
