GST: GST registration of packing machines should be done before October or face heavy penalties.
GST: On August 6, the CBIC announced that the government has made it mandatory for manufacturers of products like paan masala, gutka and tobacco to register their packaging machines under GST by October 1. Failure to follow this will result in a fine of Rs.1 lakh. CBIC had initially planned to start GST registration and monthly return filing for these manufacturers from April 1, but later postponed it to May 15. Amendments to the GST Act were included in the February 2024 Finance Bill. These rules, issued by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, also apply to companies manufacturing paan masala, hookah and tobacco products. This rule applies to both branded and non-branded products. The rules include pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, flavored zarda and gutka. It is noted that there is a risk of cancer. Branch offices must register as input service distributors with the GST authority by April 1, 2025. The provision, which is part of the Finance Bill, makes it easier for companies operating in different locations to claim tax credits. Violation will be fined.
