First time in 50 years, Manipur judge made history, know who NK Singh was appointed to the Supreme Court.

It is good news for violence-torn Manipur that for the first time after full statehood, a person from this northeastern state will become a Supreme Court judge. Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice TY Chandrachud, High Court Judges N. Godeshwar Singh (NK Singh) and R. Mahadevan's names were recommended for appointment as judges in the Supreme Court on Thursday. Justice NK Singh is currently the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court and Justice Mahadevan is the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Justice NK Singh was the first Supreme Court judge from Manipur. NK Singh was sworn in as the 36th Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in February last year. NK Singh was born in 1963 in Imphal. His father N. Ibotombi Singh was also the judge. He was a member of Guwahati High Court. The largest court of the country has 34 posts of judges including the Chief Justice and currently the number of judges is 32. A collegium comprising Justices Sanjeev Khanna, Justice PR Kawai, Justice Surya Kanth and Justice Hrishikesh Roy convened yesterday after a marathon meeting lasting about 4 hours. The Collegium unanimously decided to appoint a Manipur native as a Supreme Court judge for the first time since Manipur attained full statehood. Apart from Justice NK Singh, Justice Mahadevan, who belongs to a backward caste, was also recommended as a judge of the Supreme Court. The collegium headed by the Chief Justice has promised to give representation to the deserving people from the lower sections of the society among the judges in the court. Apart from this, a senior judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Tashi Rabastan, has been nominated as the Chief Justice of Meghalaya. Justice Rabastan, who follows Buddhism, is the first judge from Ladakh to become the Chief Justice of the High Court. He will take over after the retirement of the present Chief Justice S. Vaidyanathan. Delhi has got the maximum share in the matter of appointment of Chief Justices in different High Courts as 3 of its judges have been nominated to the highest judicial post of the states i.e. Chief Justice. Justice Manmohan, who is the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has been recommended for appointment as the regular Chief Justice of this High Court. Whereas Justice Rajeev Shaktar has been nominated as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh. Justice Suresh Kait from the Dalit community has been nominated as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. The post will fall vacant if Justice NK Singh becomes a judge of the Supreme Court. SC Collegium to get new Chief Justices of Kerala and Madras High Court, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao has been recommended as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court. This position was held by Judge B.R. Sarangi will fill up on July 19. After retirement. Delhi High Court Judge Shaktar will serve as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh. GS Chandawalia, a senior judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been nominated as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. His father Justice SS Chandawalia retired as Chief Justice of Patna on July 27, 1987. Apart from this, Nitin Jamdar as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and K.R. as Chief Justice of Madras High Court. The collegium has also recommended the appointment of Sriram.
