Failure is also necessary, only then you will enjoy victory
New Delhi, September 10 (IANS). This year's theme on World Suicide Prevention Day is 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide'. In today's stressful life, people are falling prey to it. Every day we get to hear news of suicides of adults as well as children. The narrative should be such that it does not just talk about success and only success, but it should be told that failure is also necessary to move forward.
Regarding success and failure, IANS spoke to Dr Ashok Sharma, Chief Medical Officer (SAG) of Ayush Directorate Delhi and in-charge of IHBAS unit.
Dr. Ashok Sharma said that the World Health Organization (WHO) has chosen this day to get people out of thoughts like suicide. According to WHO, every year around 7 lakh people across the world take a serious step like suicide.
He said, “It is necessary to know what such a person is struggling with on the social, mental and physical front. Earlier people were afraid to even talk about this, but in today's time at least we are able to talk openly on this issue, which is a very important thing.”
Dr. Ashok further said, “For this, the society needs to come forward and work in this direction, so that we can prove to be helpful for the people. This will ensure that when there is no criticism of anyone, and there is full support of the society, then the person will stay on the right path and not choose the wrong path.”
He further said that that is why a day has been set to discuss this problem so that people come forward and talk about it and take a pledge that whoever is around us who is facing this problem, we should talk to them openly.
What support can the family provide in this problem? On this Dr. Ashok said, “Many times a family member is overly worried about problems in relationships or problems related to money. In such a situation, many times the family members are unable to understand it, but in such a situation the family should give full support to that person so that he can come out of that circle.”
He further said, “Everyone faces ups and downs in life. Sometimes we come out of it. But the biggest problem here is that we see that a member of our family is very upset and despite this we are not supporting him, this is wrong.”
He said that if the family feels that any member is having wrong thoughts in his mind and his behaviour also seems to have changed, then the family should keep an eye on him.
Regarding depression in children, he said, “Just as we find the cause of a disease, we need to know the reason behind the child's stress. Parents should prepare their children to fail. Do not put any pressure on children regarding their career, and do not have any expectations from them.”
“When children fail to fulfil the family's expectations, many times parents start telling their children that we spent so much money on you, and even after that you could not do anything, due to which thoughts like ending one's life start coming in the mind of the child.”
He advised that in such a situation, parents need to establish a special kind of relationship with their children, they need to talk to them about their problems, so that they feel that I am not the only one who is facing this failure.
