Elon Musk says X and SpaceX will move their headquarters to Texas
Elon Musk announced Tuesday that he is moving the headquarters of two of his companies, the social media platform X and the rocket maker SpaceX, to Texas, intensifying the dispute with California.
Musk on Monday criticized a California law signed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom that bans schools from requiring teachers to notify parents if they change their gender identity. Musk called the law “the final straw” and said he warned Newsom that such a law would “force families and businesses to leave California to protect our children.”
SpaceX will move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, Musk said. San Francisco-based X is moving to Austin.
SpaceX, X and Musk did not respond to requests for comment. Mr. Newsom’s office responded Tuesday to a post by Mr. X that showed Mr. Musk insulting Donald J. Trump. Musk supported the former president on Saturday.
Mr. Musk has long had a love-hate relationship with California and resents government overinvolvement in the state. Musk previously moved the headquarters of his electric car maker Tesla from Palo Alto, California, to Austin in response to the Bay Area’s coronavirus lockdown in 2020. Musk blamed the closure of the Tesla factory in Fremont, California on the rules. Downgrading “fascist”.
He also criticized the government for being slow to innovate and slowing down projects to improve people’s lives through excessive oversight. And he said crime and drug use in San Francisco made it difficult for him to move freely out of X’s office. He consulted with local politicians and said the city was stuck in a “cycle of destruction.”
But he is hesitant to abandon California entirely and continue to leverage Silicon Valley and its technological talent for artificial intelligence and engineering.
Texas has no state income tax or capital gains tax, making it an attractive place to live for high earners like Mr. Musk and some of his employees. The governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
However, the move will likely have limited impact on Musk’s fundamental financial position, said Eric Talley, a professor of law and corporate governance at Columbia Law School.
“The whole idea is that Mr. Musk is making this statement as a protest statement that has nothing to do with corporate law,” Mr. Musk said. Daley said. “I would be surprised if SpaceX or X shut down the state completely.”
Sir, Musk has spoken out about transgender issues. He filed a complaint online and posted the word “pronoun chuck” on X in 2020. He told employees who hate performing on stage to think of him as “cisgender” (a term that refers to non-transgender people), which is an insult, he said in a post on X.
In 2022, one of Musk’s children officially requested a name and gender change. Sir, according to Musk’s biographer Walter Isaacson, he tried to hide his gender identity from his father, but learned about it from another family member. In the name change documents, the girl wrote: “I no longer want to live and have no contact with my biological father.”
A new California law aims to protect transgender people from coming out to their parents. Many California school boards have adopted policies requiring school officials to notify parents if their child changes name or gender identity. However, the new law prevents this.
Tennessee and North Carolina have passed similar policies requiring teachers to inform parents as part of a “parental rights movement” backed by national conservative organizations.
