Do you also not understand the difference between expiry date and best before date? FSSAI has solved the problem
Packaged Food Item: 'Best Before' indicates that the product will not taste as good after the date and 'Expiry' date indicates that the food is no longer fit for consumption. Hence, product labels help in understanding when it is safe to use them or not.
Expiry And Best Before Date: Usually packaged foods come with 'Best Before' and 'Expiry' dates. People throw away the products whose 'Best Before' date has passed. But have you ever thought about the difference between 'Best Before' and 'Expiry' dates? 'Best Before' tells that after the date has passed, the taste of the product will not be as good as before and 'Expiry' date tells that this food is no longer fit for consumption.
When it comes to buying packaged food products, it is very important to read the label and know what ingredients go into the food. This will help you figure out if the product is safe for you or not. Some food items are at increased risk of growing bacteria after their 'best before' or 'expiry' date. So the label helps you understand when it is not safe to use them.
What does the best before date indicate?
According to a video posted by the FSSAI handle on X, before buying food products, make sure to check the manufacturing, best before and expiry dates. While the manufacturing date tells when the product was made, the best before date tells how long it can be used. According to FSSAI, “After the best before date, the food product may lose its taste, freshness, aroma or nutrients. This means that the food is no longer safe to eat.”
What does 'expiry' date mean?
On the other hand, the 'expiry' date tells about the date after which the food is unsafe to eat. Although you can eat the food after the best before date, eating it after the expiry date can harm your health. FSSAI says that if the 'expiry' date is 30 June 2020, then avoid eating the food after this date. Eating such food can be dangerous for health.
