Durgapur. Accidents do not stop at Durgapuri Steel Plant (DSP). A contract worker was seriously injured after falling from a crane while on duty at the DSP Division Mill Department on Thursday morning. His name is Prasenjit Ghosh (35). After the incident, he was immediately rushed to DSP Main Hospital. From there he was sent to Mission Hospital in Bithannagar. According to information received, the condition of the injured contract worker is said to be critical at the Mission Hospital. It turns out that Prosenjit Ghosh is a resident of Gopal Math area. He is working as a contract worker in the electrical section of a section mill. If sources are to be believed, electrical work was going on at the dispatch unit of the DSP Division Mill on Thursday morning. An electrical contractor was working on crane no.31. The contract laborer fell down due to loss of balance and sustained serious injuries. The workers later said that the accident happened because the contract worker was not wearing a safety belt. Workers working on high-rise cranes are required to wear safety belts. The Department of Defense has a rule to provide safety belts to contract workers working at heights. The accident is said to have occurred because the security department did not provide safety belts to the contract workers. Union representatives expressed anger against the Defense Department and DSP management over the incident. Union leaders expressed concern that such incidents were happening daily at the plant. In order to increase productivity, management has compromised on worker safety. Workers said that a similar incident took place in the MSM section of the plant on Wednesday night, when the crane's hook (about 60 kg) suddenly broke and fell down, causing panic among the workers. It was lucky that the broken part of the crane did not fall on any of the workers. If there was a worker there he might have died. The workers raised an agitation over the incident till Wednesday night, blaming the DSP management. In this regard, DSP's public relations officer PT Roy said: It has been reported that a contract worker has been seriously injured after falling from the crane. He has been hospitalized for treatment. His condition is said to be normal. Disclaimer: This is an automated news feed of Prabhat Khabar newspaper. This is not edited by Prabhat Khabar.com team.
