The 2001 Parliament Attack: A Dark Day in Indian History
On the morning of December 13, 2001, five heavily armed terrorists stormed the Parliament premises, using fake Ministry of Home Affairs and Parliament stickers on their vehicle. Armed with AK-47 rifles, they began indiscriminate firing outside the complex. At the time, senior leaders, including the then Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani, along with around 80 dignitaries, were present inside Parliament.
In an intense exchange of fire, security forces displayed exceptional bravery and neutralised all five terrorists, averting a greater catastrophe. However, the attack left a grim toll of nine individuals, including eight security personnel and one gardener, who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Aftermath and Its Impact on India-Pakistan Relations
Investigations revealed that the attackers had come from Pakistan, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations. While many demanded immediate retaliation, India chose a diplomatic approach, leveraging international pressure on Pakistan. This strategy marked a pivotal moment in India’s counter-terrorism efforts on the global stage.
