BJD's sun sets after 24 years Naveen Patnaik resigns as chief minister after defeat
Odisha Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik resigned as chief minister on Wednesday. He went to the Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar and submitted his resignation letter to Governor Raghubar Das. Naveen Patnaik was the Chief Minister of the state for the last 24 years. Along with the Lok Sabha elections, the results of the Assembly elections in Odisha were also announced on Tuesday, June 4. Out of the total 21 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 20 seats and the Congress one seat. BJP also won the assembly elections here. BJP won 78 out of 147 seats. BJD won only 51 seats. PM Modi's mantra worked in the state. BJP won with majority in Odisha. Now for the first time, BJP will form the government with a single majority. BJP is yet to announce the Chief Minister. The party contested the elections with only the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Soon the BJP may claim to form a new government. Chief Minister Patnaik contested from two constituencies in the assembly elections. One is Hinchili and the other is Kanthabanchi. In Hinchili constituency, he defeated Shishir Kumar Mishra of BJP by a margin of 4636 votes. Congress's Rajinikanth Pathi is third. Patnaik got 66459 votes. Hinchali Assembly constituency is the traditional seat of Chief Minister Patnaik. And so had to face defeat there, at Kandapanji. BJP's Laxman Bagh won in Kandapanchi constituency. He defeated Naveen Patnaik by a margin of 16344 votes. Santhosh Singh Saluja of Congress remains in third position. Lakshmanan got 90876 votes. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik got 74543 votes. Going by the commission's data, the Congress won 14 seats and the CPM one seat in the Odisha assembly elections. Independent candidates have won three seats. If you look at the statistics, in the 2019 assembly elections, BJD had won 113 seats, BJP 23 seats and Congress 9 seats. In 2000, the BJP-PJD alliance came to power in Odisha and Naveen Patnaik became the chief minister. In 2009, the BJD ended its 11-year-old relationship after seat-sharing talks between the two parties failed. Patnaik won subsequent elections in the state. PM Modi thanked Interestingly, talks on seat-sharing between the two parties were initiated before the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections this year, but failed. This time the BJD leadership could not lead their party to victory. He said that the people of Odisha have developed a mindset for change. This is the faith people have in Prime Minister Modi. That is why they voted for BJP and made them win.
