‘Best finisher’ Virat Kohli deserves to win the IPL trophy: Stuart Broad
Former England cricketer Stuart Broad believes star RCB player Virat Kohli deserves to win an IPL trophy with his franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Broad praised Kohli’s batting prowess as he acknowledged the 35-year-old as ‘one of the best finishers in the world’. Virat Kohli played a pivotal role in helping RCB open their points tally with a win over Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, with his emphatic innings of 77 runs off 49 balls on March 25. The batter was seen in his usual composed but explosive style with the bat during the match, which was also their first home match of the season at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.
Speaking to Star Sports, Broad explained how Kohli’s brilliant career is deserving of an IPL trophy.
“I think all of us cricket fans want to see him lift the trophy. I’ve no doubt that whether that’s this year or in years to come, I think he deserves. He’s been a Knight of Indian cricket and he deserves it,” Broad said.
Broad hailed the star batter’s ability to finish with the bat for India and RCB, specifically in pressure scenarios.
“He is one of the best finisher as a batter in the world. Anytime that he’s in a team, chasing anything around that 170-180 mark, he battles to get over the line so hard. He’s so calm, he’s seen it all, hits around the wicket. Yeah. You gave a couple chances? Yes, you gave a couple of chances yesterday, but if the opposition doesn’t take those chances, he makes you pay,” Broad added.
IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings
The IPL 2024 season marked the return of Virat Kohli to cricketing action, after having missed India’s England series in Janurary due to the birth of his second child. Broad went on to highlight how the recent scenarios have helped Kohli walk into the IPL 2024 season with a fresh mindset.
“His mindset coming into this IPL, He looked very fresh, the importance of having the family settled and you know that they are happy at hope, it really does help you on the criket field. Interesting interview he gave after the game, he just feels very peaceful and happy,”
Kohli’s performance against the Punjab Kings on Monday, saw him complete his 100th half-century in the IPL. The phenomenal performance by the crowd-favorite of M Chinnaswamy stadium was awarded with the man of the match and also saw him become the current holder of the orange cap.
After their win against the Punjab Kings by 4 wickets, RCB will be hoping to continue their winning momentum in their upcoming match against long-rivals Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29.
