Bangladesh: The pain of Teesta water sharing treaty has been raised again, Yunus recommended India to resolve the issue
Dhaka: The issue of Teesta water sharing treaty has once again become a thorn in Bangladesh. Chief advisor of the interim government of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus has recommended India to resolve this issue. He said that there will be no use in postponing it for years.
Muhammad Yunus has said that the interim government will work with India on ways to resolve differences over the long-pending Teesta water sharing treaty because procrastinating it for years will not benefit any country.

Yunus told PTI in an interview at his official residence in Dhaka that the water sharing issue between the two countries should be resolved according to international norms. He stressed that lower riparian countries like Bangladesh have exclusive rights which they want to retain.

Yunus further said that he said that there would be no use in not working to resolve this issue i.e. water sharing. Even if I am not happy and sign, it would be better if I know how much water I will get. This issue has to be resolved.
Pressure will be put to resolve it soon
Asked if the interim government would push for an early resolution of the issues of the Teesta water sharing treaty, he said the new government would work on it. “We have to sit together and resolve it,” he told PTI.

Let us tell you that India and Bangladesh were about to sign an agreement on Teesta water sharing during the visit of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Dhaka in 2011, but West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to support it citing water shortage in her state.
