Bangladesh gift: Big gift from Bangladesh to West Bengal ahead of Durga Puja, Hilsa fish export to India begins
Bangladesh Prize: The interim government headed by Prof. Muhammad Yunus banned the export of Hilsa to India to meet domestic demand. This ended Bangladesh's long-standing tradition of a 'goodwill gesture' towards its neighbours. In consideration of the exporters' request, approval has been given to export 3,000 tonnes of Hilsa fish (to India) ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja, subject to certain conditions, the commerce ministry said in a statement. The ministry has asked the applicants to contact the concerned branch to get the export permit. Sheikh Hasina's government has always gifted Hilsa to India in September and October. This custom has been going on for years. Bangladesh has approved 79 companies to export a total of 4,000 tonnes to India by 2023, officials said. Bangladesh is the world's largest producer of hilsa, but due to high local demand, it bans exports of this fish. However, during the Durga Puja festival, he used to relax the ban on the export of this fish, a favorite dish of Bengalis. The Fish Importers Association of India had earlier this month requested to allow hilsa fish exports to India during Durga Puja, amid uncertainty over fish exports this year due to unrest and regime change in the country. Syed Anwar Maqsood, secretary of the association, in a letter dated September 9, said that Bangladesh banned the export of hilsa in 2012, but for the last 5 years it has been exporting small quantities from the first week to the end of September as a goodwill gesture. Durga Puja allows its export. The post Bangladesh gift: Big gift from Bangladesh to West Bengal ahead of Durga Puja, Hilsa fish export to India begins by Prabhat Kabar.
