Javagal Srinath, the former Indian cricketer, shed light on the pivotal role of pharmaceuticals in aiding athlete recovery.
His revelations have sparked a conversation about the relationship between sports and the pharmaceutical industry. With a career spanning 67 Test matches and 229 ODIs, Srinath’s insights carry a lot of weight. Having experienced professional cricket, he understands the toll it takes on the body. During the International Conference on ‘Global Collaboration in Pharmaceuticals, Bridging Borders, Breaking Barriers,’ Srinath candidly shared his experiences as an athlete, highlighting the significance of painkillers and other medications in the recovery process.
“As sportsmen, we live on painkillers. I have been living on lots of salts which kill the pain. it is not good but at times you need it. Its side effects have lessened quite a bit and some of the medicines are relaxants,” Srinath said.

However, the role of pharmaceuticals extends beyond just pain management. Javagal Srinath also highlighted the importance of multivitamins and other medications in enhancing recovery. The demands of professional sports often deplete the body’s resources, and these supplements help replenish essential nutrients and facilitate faster healing.
“Pharmacy will play a role in whichever activity it could be and it is evolving. Pharmaceuticals have played a huge role in terms of recovery, and so have multivitamins,” Srinath concluded.

Srinath is currently a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and he recently officiated his 250th men’s One Day International in the Asia Cup match between India and Nepal in Pallekele. Ever since retiring from international cricket, Srinath has been connected with the sport closely.
