Ajay Roy, who suffered a hat-trick defeat in Varanasi, will get 'good numbers' in Kashi this time.
In the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections, all eyes are on Prime Minister Modi's Varanasi constituency. While Prime Minister Modi entered the polls for a hat-trick of victories, Congress's Ajay Roy, who suffered a hat-trick of defeats in Varanasi constituency, is trying his luck for the fourth time. Ajay Rai, who contested elections against PM Modi twice and thrice in Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, finished third each time, but his numbers could be better this time. This is due to the presence of joint candidates in the SP-Congress alliance and the Indian alliance. Ajay Rai is directly competing with Prime Minister Modi in this situation. Ajay Rai started his political journey from BJP. He was associated with everything from the ABVP to the Sangam and was part of the Ram Mandir movement in the 90s. While in the BJP, Ajay Roy was a three-time MLA. After that, he left the BJP in 2009 and joined the Samajwadi Party and joined the Congress in 2012. A Samajwadi and Congress stalwart, he is trying his luck in the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency. Ajay Rai is also the president of Uttar Pradesh Congress these days and is the Congress candidate from Varanasi against Prime Minister Modi, but is not contesting elections for the first time. Ajay Roy has been continuously trying his luck from Varanasi constituency since 2009 but he could not even come from third to second let alone win. In 2009, Ajay Roy contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections for the first time, but after Dr. Murali Manohar Joshi was announced as its candidate, Ajay Roy left the party. He split from BJP and joined Samajwadi Party to contest from Varsani constituency. In 2009, there was competition between BJP's Murali Manohar Joshi, Samajwadi Party's Ajay Rai and Bahujan Samaj Party's Mukhtar Ansari in the Varanasi constituency. Murali Manohar Joshi got 203122 votes and Mukhtar Ansari got 18,591 votes. Ajay Rai is third with 123874 votes. In this election, Murali Manohar Joshi defeated Mukhtar Ansari by a margin of about 18 thousand votes. Ajay Rai's bail was forfeited in 2014. Ajay Rai contested the second Lok Sabha election in 2014 from Varanasi. This time Ajay Rai contested on behalf of the Congress and was contested by senior BJP leader and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This election turned out to be Modi vs. Kejriwal. Narendra Modi secured 581,022 votes, Arvind Kejriwal secured 209,238 votes and Ajay Rai secured third position with 75,614 votes. Ajay Roy could not even save his deposit as Narendra Modi won by a margin of 371784 votes. Ajay Roy once again contested the 2019 elections as a Congress candidate from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. This time too he faced Prime Minister Modi and SP-BSP joint candidate Shalini Yadav. Prime Minister Modi got 6,74,664 votes, Samajwadi Party's Shalini Yadav got 195,159 votes and Congress candidate Ajay Rai got 152,548 votes. While Prime Minister Modi won by a margin of 4,79,505 votes, Ajay Rai remained at the third position with 1.5 lakh votes. Even for the third time, Ajay Roy could not go beyond third place. In this election he lost miserably against Prime Minister Modi by a margin of 5,22,116 votes. Ajay Rai is contesting for the fourth term in 2024. Ajay Roy, who suffered a hat-trick of defeats in the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, is contesting for the fourth term. Ajay Roy has finished third in the last three Lok Sabha elections, but this time the situation is different from the 2009, 2014 and 2019 elections. In the last three elections, Ajay Roy was not in the main contest in Varanasi constituency, but this time it is different. In the 2024 elections, BJP's Narendra Modi, Congress's Ajay Rai and Bahujan Samaj Party's Athar Lari are in the fray in the Varanasi constituency, but the election is likely to be between PM Modi and Ajay Rai. Ajay Rai hails from the All India Alliance, due to which he has support from the SP to the Aam Aadmi Party. Ajay Rai has his own vote bank in Varanasi constituency which is evident from last three elections. With Ajay Roy as the candidate of the Indian Alliance this time, the Samajwadi Party is also contesting the elections with full strength. SP MP Dimple Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi held a road show in support of Ajay Roy, while SP chief Akhilesh Yadav along with Rahul Gandhi will reach a public meeting on Tuesday. With this, all the parties of the Indian alliance including Congress and Samajwadi are voting in support of Ajay Roy in Varanasi constituency. All India candidate Ajay Roy is confident that the people of Varanasi will stand strongly with him and support Ajay Roy in this Lok Sabha election as well. He is a local face among people. This time the Lok Sabha election equation has changed. Bahujan Samaj Party candidates cannot escape their impact. Ajay Rai has a political base in Varanasi. In such a situation, if the opposition parties come together and vote in favor of Ajay Roy, his situation will improve. For the first time in 20 years, Ajay Roy is standing in a major tournament in Varanasi. Ajay Roy is expected to garner good votes in such a situation.
