After Maharashtra and UP Win, Rejuvenated BJP To Push for Waqf Bill in Winter Session of Parliament! Is INDIA Alliance Prepared?

Parliament Winter Session: The Winter Session of the Parliament has commenced, marking the third session of the 18th Lok Sabha. This session carries significant weight for the ruling BJP-led NDA and the opposition INDIA Alliance. Among the key legislative matters, the Waqf Amendment Bill is expected to be a major point of discussion. With the BJP riding high after electoral victories in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and the INDIA Alliance reeling from setbacks, a crucial question arises: is the opposition prepared to counter a confident BJP effectively? Let’s delve deeper into the developments shaping this session.

BJP’s Renewed Confidence Post Maharashtra and UP Wins

The BJP’s recent electoral victories in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have set the stage for the Parliament Winter Session. Bolstered by these wins, the party is expected to focus on legislative priorities, including the Waqf Bill, which could be tabled for approval.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) assigned to review the bill is anticipated to submit its report. However, opposition members have sought an extension, adding a layer of uncertainty to the timeline. The bill’s progress will depend heavily on the JPC’s findings and the government’s ability to navigate opposition challenges effectively.

PM Modi’s Strong Message on Parliamentary Conduct

On the session’s first day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media, emphasizing the need for disciplined and constructive parliamentary debates. He remarked:

“Some people who have been rejected by the people are constantly trying to control the Parliament through hooliganism by a handful of people. The people of the country count all their actions and when the time comes, they also punish them. But the most painful thing is that the new parliamentarians bring new ideas, new energy and they do not belong to any one party but to all parties. Some people usurp their rights and they do not even get the opportunity to speak in the House…But those who have been continuously rejected by the people 80-90 times do not allow discussions to take place in the Parliament. They neither respect the spirit of democracy nor do they understand the importance of people’s aspirations. They have no responsibility towards them, they are unable to understand them and the result is that they never live up to the expectations of the people.”

PM Modi further stressed the importance of honoring democratic values, urging MPs to engage in meaningful discussions that reflect the aspirations of the Indian populace. His statements underscore the government’s intent to maintain decorum and ensure productive deliberations during the Parliament Winter Session.

Opposition’s Agenda: INDIA Alliance Gears Up

The INDIA Alliance, an amalgamation of opposition parties, is preparing to challenge the BJP on multiple fronts during the session. Prominent issues like the Manipur violence, the Adani controversy, economic challenges, and farmers’ grievances are expected to dominate their agenda.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi shed light on their strategy, stating: “Today there is a meeting of INDIA alliance at the office of Mallikarjun Kharge, we will decide the strategy there. My only request is that the govt does not try to run away from the severe issues affecting the country in terms of economy, social justice, law and order. Adani, Manipur, farmers’ distress, scheduled castes. Parliament is as much for passing bills and equally if not more, for discussing the important issues affecting the Indian public.”

A strategy meeting chaired by Mallikarjun Kharge included senior leaders such as Pramod Tiwari and KC Venugopal. The opposition plans to spotlight pressing issues, holding the government accountable for its actions and decisions.

The Waqf Amendment Bill

The Waqf Bill is expected to be one of the most debated pieces of legislation during this session. This proposed amendment aims to reform the administration of waqf properties across the country, a topic that has sparked significant interest and opposition.

The BJP, fresh from its electoral victories, is likely to push for the bill’s approval, using its current momentum to address contentious issues. On the other hand, the INDIA Alliance is expected to scrutinize the bill closely, ensuring that their concerns are brought to the forefront. The passage of the bill will require deft political maneuvering, as the opposition looks to use this legislation as a battleground to challenge the government’s policy decisions.

Parliament Winter Session: A Crucial Test for Both Sides

This Winter Session is set to be a pivotal one, with high expectations from both the ruling government and the opposition. While the BJP looks to push forward key legislative reforms like the Waqf Bill, the opposition is gearing up to spotlight issues of national importance. The session promises intense debates and discussions, reflecting the pulse of Indian democracy. As the nation watches closely, the performance of both sides will shape the political discourse in the months to come.
