Action taken in RG Garh Medical College violence case, 3 policemen including 2 assistant commissioners suspended
The Kolkata Police has suspended three constables in connection with a mob attack and vandalism during a protest at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Of the three policemen affected by the move after the violence, two are assistant commissioner rank officers and one is an inspector. The three were suspended for failing to stop the ruckus that broke out at the venue on the night between August 14 and 15. These senior police officials have been held responsible for not taking appropriate measures to prevent the ruckus and hooliganism at the spot. The Kolkata Police has ordered a departmental inquiry against the three police officers. What happened during Reclaim the Night? On the night of August 14 and 15, doctors called for a protest outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the name of 'Reclaim the Night'. The protest continued peacefully for a long time in the night. Subsequently, thousands of people who came there demolished the platform set up outside the hospital in the name of demonstration. The criminals did not stop there. Also, they created a lot of commotion and vandalized the hospital premises. The crowd also clashed with the police who were present at the protest site. The incident created a stir in the middle of the night. The TMC MP and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's son-in-law spoke to the Police Commissioner and asked him to take strict action. The Kolkata Police Commissioner also reached the spot in the night. Later, the police resorted to batons and fired tear gas shells to disperse the miscreants. After this incident there was a political upheaval and Mamata's government was surrounded by opposition parties.
