Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Project on Track! Ashwani Vaishnaw Rubbishes Delays Due to Design Issue

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has dismissed reports suggesting delays in the production of Vande Bharat sleeper trains due to design approval issues. Addressing the media on Thursday, Vaishnaw clarified that the delays were primarily caused by the limited manufacturing capacity of the Russian firm Transmashholding (TMH), contracted to produce the train sets.

“The firm lacks experience in manufacturing train sets with more than six to eight coaches, which is standard in Russia. Indian Railways explicitly provided TMH with the Vande Bharat design, specifying the need for 16, 20, or 24-coach configurations to meet India’s passenger demand,” Vaishnaw explained.

Design Modifications Not the Cause

Contrary to earlier reports claiming delays due to requested design modifications, such as adding toilets and pantry cars, Vaishnaw clarified that the design process was never an issue. Instead, the challenge arose from TMH’s unpreparedness to manufacture larger train sets required for Indian routes.

Production Set to Begin Soon

The minister emphasized that the contract with TMH explicitly mandated the production of train sets with configurations suited to India’s requirements. “Some Indian routes need 24-coach trains, while others require 16-coach configurations. These specifications were outlined in the contract from the start,” Vaishnaw said, assuring that production will commence soon after resolving these issues.

The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are a key component of Indian Railways’ modernization efforts, aimed at providing high-speed, comfortable travel for long-distance passengers.
