During his opening speech at the MED Mediterranean Dialogues Conference in Rome, EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasised the importance of India’s growing relationship with the Mediterranean region. He shared, “Our annual trade with Mediterranean nations is about US dollars 80 billion. We have a diaspora here of 4,60,000, about 40% of that in Italy. Our key interests are in fertilizers, energy, water, technology, diamonds, defense, and cyber.” These sectors represent India’s deepening engagement in the region, reflecting both economic and strategic priorities.
Jaishankar also highlighted ongoing projects, including investments in infrastructure, such as airports, ports, railways, steel production, and green hydrogen development. Additionally, he mentioned the critical role India plays in connecting global digital infrastructure through submarine cables. “Our political relations with the Mediterranean are strong, and our defense collaboration is growing,” he said, stressing the importance of increased military exercises and exchanges between India and Mediterranean nations.

One of the key points in EAM S. Jaishankar’s address was India’s position on various ongoing conflicts, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine. Jaishankar expressed concern over the worsening situation in the Middle East, condemning terrorism and hostage-taking. He stated, “India unequivocally condemns terrorism and hostage taking. Large-scale civilian casualties in military operations are unacceptable. International humanitarian law must not be disregarded.” He also called for a ceasefire and advocated for a long-term resolution through a two-state solution for Palestine, aligning with India’s longstanding position on the issue.
Jaishankar acknowledged India’s active diplomatic engagement with both Israel and Iran, emphasizing India’s capacity to foster dialogue and encourage restraint among conflicting parties. He added, “We are always willing to contribute meaningfully to any international diplomatic endeavors.” India’s commitment to peacekeeping was also highlighted through its involvement in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), where Indian forces are stationed alongside Italy to maintain stability in the region.
India’s Role in the Ukraine Conflict and Rebalancing Global Power
The EAM S Jaishankar also addressed the conflict in Ukraine, which continues to have destabilizing effects on the Mediterranean and beyond. Jaishankar reiterated India’s consistent stance that “disputes in this era cannot be settled by war,” and called for a return to dialogue and diplomacy. He pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direct engagement with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, underscoring India’s commitment to contributing to a peaceful resolution.
Jaishankar concluded his remarks by emphasizing the changing global order. He noted that we are entering a new era of “re-globalizing, rebalancing, and multipolarity,” with a stronger focus on technology, talent mobility, and greener growth. He concluded, “A closer and stronger relationship between India and the Mediterranean will serve both of us well.”
