The great festival of Ganeshotsav ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ is celebrated every year on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month across the country which lasts for 10 days. During this time, people welcome Ganpati Bappa in their homes with great pomp and establish him. During this time, the idol of Ganesh Ji is installed in the house in which his vehicle Mushak, i.e. mouse is also present with him.
What is the story of the mouse becoming a vehicle
According to the mythological tale, there was a Gandharva named Krauncha in the court of King Indra. Once in Indra’s court, Krauncha was busy joking with the Apsaras. When Indra’s attention went to him, an angry Indra cursed him to become a mouse. Krauncha, who was playful by nature, went straight to the ashram of sage Parashar in the form of a strong mouse. As soon as he reached there, he created a terrible ruckus. He broke all the earthen pots in the ashram, ate all the food, destroyed the garden and gnawed all the clothes and scriptures of the sages.
Ganesh ji solved the problem
Seeing all this, Parashar Rishi became very sad and started thinking how to save himself from the terror of this mouse. Parashar Rishi went to Ganesh Ji to solve the problem. Then Ganesh Ji told Parashar Ji that I will make this mouse my vehicle right now. Saying this, Ganesh Ji threw his brilliant noose, which followed the mouse till the netherworld and tied its neck and dragged it out and presented it in front of Gajanan.
Ganesha was pleased with the praise of the mouse
The mouse fell unconscious due to the grip of the noose. As soon as it woke up, it started praying to Lord Ganesha and begging for its life. Lord Ganesha was pleased with the mouse’s prayers but said to it that you have given a lot of trouble to the Brahmins and I have taken incarnation only for the destruction of the wicked and the welfare of the virtuous men. But protecting those who seek refuge is also my ultimate duty, so ask for any boon you want.
This is how the mouse’s pride was broken
Hearing this, the ego of that naughty mouse was awakened and he said, I do not want anything from you, if you want, you can ask for a boon from me. Hearing the proud voice of the mouse, Ganesh Ji smiled inwardly and said, ‘If your words are true then you become my vehicle. As soon as the mouse said ‘Tathastu’, Ganesh Ji immediately mounted on it. Now the life of the mouse was in danger due to the weight of the heavy Gajanan. Then he prayed to Gajanan to make his weight bearable for him. In this way, by breaking the pride of the mouse, Ganesh Ji made him his vehicle.
