Spinal Cord Injury Day: Neurosurgeon answers all FAQs related to the condition

New Delhi: Spinal cord injuries are on the rise, with an incidence rate of around 20 per million, with 2,500 new cases being registered each year. According to reports, 1.5 million people in the country are living with SCI. On the other hand, one of the leading causes of road traffic accidents is SCI in India. As per other reports, 80 per cent of individuals cannot afford proper treatment in private hospitals.
Dr Vikas Naik, Consultant – Neurosurgery, Fortis Hospital, Rajaji Nagar, Bengaluru answered all the FAQs linked to Spinal cord injuries.
1. Most common cause of spinal cord injuries?
The most prevalent causes behind spinal cord injuries are motor vehicle accidents, falls, violence, and sports injuries. These traumatic events can cause damage to the spinal cord, leading to loss of function, sensation, and mobility.
2. Immediate steps to diagnose and treat?
Immediate steps include stabilising the spine, assessing neurological function, and ordering imaging tests (X-rays, CT, MRI). Treatment involves immobilization, surgery (if necessary), and medication to manage pain, blood pressure, and respiratory function.
3. Role of rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation helps individuals with spinal cord injuries regain strength, mobility, and independence. It includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, as well as psychological support and education on managing daily activities.
4. Common complications or secondary conditions?
Common complications include pressure sores, urinary tract infections, respiratory problems, and deep vein thrombosis. Secondary conditions like chronic pain, spasticity, and depression can also occur.
